A note from the director...
I love the work of Eugene O’Neill. I've directed Anna Christie, A Moon For The Misbegotten and Desire Under The Elms. I love them all deeply, and I want to direct more of his work. Ah, Wilderness! is no exception: I love it more every day I work on it. O'Neill wears his heart on his sleeve in his writing. His work is big in every way - he is fearless. He cares about the world, politics, art, and people. He is ambitious in his sincerity about the possibility – the fervent hope – that his work can change the world. Anyone who believes that is going to fail sometimes, fail big, and people are going to mock them. I love him for his ambition, his sincerity, and his courage.
In a way, O'Neill is showing a young man learning what it means to live truly and fully, in each and every moment, and the title is about the feeling Richard has when he does so: it should be said following a deep breath and a with a joyful exhalation: Ah, Wilderness!
